Chapter Wise Class TestT-6Chapter-19Nitrogen and Sulphur
Total Marks: 17(Subjective Type)Time: 33 Minutes
2.Write short answers to any six (6) questions.[6 × 2 = 12]
  1. Why do metals form cations?
Ans: Metals have few (1-3) valence electrons and low ionization energy, so they easily lose these electrons to attain a stable noble gas configuration. Losing electrons leaves a positive ion (cation), e.g. Na → Na+ + e–.
  2. Describe the reaction of metals with cold water.
Ans: Group 1 metals react vigorously with cold water giving hydroxide and hydrogen: 2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2. Ca reacts slowly and Mg very slowly with cold water, while Al and Zn do not react with cold water.
  3. What happened to the two pieces of uncoated metal touch in space?
Ans: They stick (fuse) together permanently. In space there is no air, so no oxide layer forms on the clean metal surfaces; the metal atoms bond directly. This is called cold welding.
  4. Explain the formation of NO during lightning.
Ans: The very high temperature of lightning makes atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen combine: N2 + O2 → 2NO. NO is then oxidised to NO2: 2NO + O2 → 2NO2.
  5. How is acid rain formed from oxides of nitrogen?
Ans: NO is oxidised in air to NO2 (2NO + O2 → 2NO2). NO2 dissolves in rain water to give nitric acid: 4NO2 + O2 + 2H2O → 4HNO3. The rain with pH below 5.6 is acid rain.
  6. How do aluminum and zinc react with water.
Ans: They do not react with cold water, but react with steam to form oxide and hydrogen: 2Al + 3H2O → Al2O3 + 3H2 and Zn + H2O → ZnO + H2.
  7. Name one metal which will displace Zn from its salt.
Ans: Magnesium (or any metal above Zn in the reactivity series, such as Al or Ca): Mg + ZnSO4 → MgSO4 + Zn.
  8. How do oxides of nitrogen pollute environment and lung disease?
Ans: NO2 reacts with moisture to form nitric acid, causing acid rain and photochemical smog and damaging plants, buildings and water. When inhaled, it irritates and damages lung tissue, causing bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory diseases.
  9. What role does ultraviolet radiation play in air pollution?
Ans: UV radiation from sunlight breaks NO2 into NO and O atoms (NO2 → NO + O); O combines with O2 to form ozone (O + O2 → O3). This starts photochemical reactions that form secondary pollutants and smog.
Note: Attempt any one question.[5 × 1 = 5]
3.Differentiate between first and second group metals based on their reactivities with oxygen and water.
Ans:
PropertyGroup 1 (Alkali metals)Group 2 (Alkaline earth metals)
With oxygenBurn rapidly in air to form oxides/peroxides (4Na + O2 → 2Na2O)Less vigorous; burn on heating (2Mg + O2 → 2MgO)
With waterViolent reaction with cold water (2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2)Slower; Mg reacts with steam (Mg + H2O → MgO + H2)
ReasonOne valence electron, lost easilyTwo valence electrons, higher ionization energy
4.What is reactivity series of metals. How it is helpful in predicting their chemical reactions?
Ans: The reactivity series is the arrangement of metals in decreasing order of their reactivity: K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > H > Cu > Ag > Au.
  • A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution (Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu).
  • Metals above hydrogen react with dilute acids to release H2; those below do not.
  • It predicts reaction with water/steam: K, Na, Ca react with cold water; Mg, Al, Zn with steam.
  • It shows how metals are extracted: highly reactive ones by electrolysis, others by reduction with carbon.
